Pool Open - No Chlorine Level Despite Adding Gallons and Gallons

Gosh, that almost sounds like you've got ammonia. Sometimes the conditions are just right and the stabilizer breaks down to ammonia before it becomes harmless. An aquarium test will show it if that's the case.

    CYA Delay

Yeah two weeks maybe, only if you add it to the skimmer....which should not be done that way. It will end up sitting in the filter until completely dissolved. Which is where that figure comes from. I can dissolve a sock full in about 20 minutes. 2 hours later while the pump is running I can...

    Why add CYA explicitly?

When i open I need the cya raised immediately so my chlorine doesn't burn up in sunlight from the UV. this can happen as quickly as 15 minutes. I lose my cya over the winter. I can dissolve a sock full in about 20 minutes. About 2 hours later my cya is exactly where it needs to be. Nothing...

Semi-Newbie trying to open the our pool problems

Can you see water running through the pump cover? I'm thinking you are since it's making it's way out the returns. The sand filters with top valves such as yours don't have a bleeder. Just run it for 30 minutes and all the air will purge itself out. If the gauge is sticking at 20 psi when...

Drain cover came off with screws, how to fix?

Maybe a bead of marine sealant around the inner ring then press it back in and let it cure for 48 hours. My 002 cents

    Vinyl Replacement Liner

My old liner lasted 22 years. Unbelievable. But it was rice paper at that point lol. Going on 9 years since it was replaced.

Is my pump on it's way out?

I'm not so sure that's really the case. I have a 2 speed pump that starts on low every day and works quite well. I never lose prime unless I pull the pump basket lid. If your system doesn't lose prime from a suction leak, there's no need to prime it ever. If you lose prime of course the half...

Pool open - quick sanity check on chemicals

Add the cya first. Preferably dissolved in a sock in front of the deep end return. The chlorine you add after, will last longer that way.

Aren't pools always green when they are opened?

My pool doesn't ever go green. Going on ten years. Close on Thanksgiving, open on March first. No chlorine nor algecide added while closed, no cover used either. I do brush it and vac with a battery powered hand vac on a pole to keep it clean though. One year I opened in April and I saw a tiny...

Pool seems to just drink up bleach so fast

Nothing wrong with using plain bleach. I buy cases of 6% at the local restaurant supply. All fresh with recent dates. It's all they have but no additives nor splash less. Been chlorinating with it for 10 years. Never had any algae issues, I test daily in the summer. I have noticed lately that...

    Adding baking soda

I know my pool is very happy and steady ph at TA of 50. Maybe try that first. No need to lower the ph. I just add baking soda, without lowering it. Works great on my pool. Ours are close volume wise. I think your ph will stay at 7.5, mine did when I raised it from 40 to 50 recently.

    Pool Opening Procedure Questions ?

I close late on Thanksgiving weekend and open early on March first. That can be helpful in having less swamp situation to deal with. My pool stays clear between November and March. No swamp. And no chlorine is added in those months. Then it's just maintaining chlorine from March to memorial...

    Clearing Iron stains before open?

The best way to spot treat, it will need to be underwater I think.

    Clearing Iron stains before open?

Crushed vitamin c tablets in a sock is what I use to spot treat. A handful dissolves within about 4-5 minutes. Use Jack's magic pink stuff sequestrant to keep it gone. The staining is probably all over and maybe not noticed as much. I'd recommend a full AA treatment. I was totally blown...

    CYA and Clarity

Ya definitely. If I test 50f water it's definitely higher cya reading unless I warm it up to room temp first. Others have had that experience as well.

    CYA and Clarity

Yep. Every year I open to 20 ppm cya. I then add enough to get to 50 on March first. Needs another 20 ppm added in June to maintain the 50 ppm. It's been this way, every year for 9 years. I did try 30 ppm at first but my chlorine lasts best with 50. Pro tip I learned a few years ago: Test...

Clear water, with a green tint?

AA treatment lifts the stains, then use something like Jack's magic pink stuff as a sequestrant to keep the metal in solution. I did an AA 2 years ago and i couldn't believe how much more blue my liner turned back to after the staining was gone. I have trace iron in my city water.
  18. borjis

What is the best sequesterant to use after AA treatment?

Jack's magic the pink stuff, should work, but you'll have to continue usage to keep it fully stain free. If the iron is out of solution after adding chlorine and the water turns green, you can put poly fill in the skimmer to try capturing the iron, but it won't work after the sequestrant puts...

    Brown staining in pool. Copper?

It's important to put some kind of water filter inline when you refill (to prevent iron), otherwise you'll be back to square one. Ive got trace iron in my city water as well. Been thinking of adding an RV softener.

Dealing with bees squatting in rocks

I had an issue w them last summer. I couldn't take off my bubble cover without getting harassed by them. Went on for about 2 weeks. I got them to go away by spraying water with some dish soap all around the edges of the bubble cover about 5-6 times per day. They didn't like the taste and...

restoring in ground cement pool that possibly had liner

Yeah I would pay for custom laser measuring of the liner. If anything is wrong, it's on them. Mine cost roughly 900 ish just for the measurements. You won't have to do it again. The new liner will have a serial number that the liner Co can make again when the new one needs to be replaced...

Mastertemp 400K BTU HD - Making a vibration or metal rubbing noise?

Maybe check that the inducer motor spins freely and isn't making contact with anything else. If it has one. You should also hear it at the beginning before the burners light. Could be bearings too.

Clear water but looks like pond foam - is it the filter?

How's your CH levels? Sometimes foaming can be mitigated with calcium .....at least 50 ppm on the ch test might clear that up. Worth a look. But I don't know why it's all brown like that, unless it's just dirty from winter time winds/dirt getting in.

Old pool that came with the house, very frustrated, I was unable to clear the pool all summer, about ready to drain and gut everything.

It almost sounds like another really long slam someone dealt with. The issue ended up being play sand in the filter, not pool filtering sand. It cleared up very quickly once the proper sand was installed. Thinking out loud. It may or may not be the cause. Worth considering.

    Pool leaking at buddy seat

You need something that can be applied and cures underwater, like flex seal. Marine sealant won't cure unless it's dry. For a quick possible fix, cut a piece of Saran wrap and place it in the leak area. It might draw the plastic in under pressure, reducing the leak greatly. I had a recent...
