    Balance and algae

Please do not use any more algaecide. It does little for visible algae and usually contains copper and other heavy metals that can stain your pool. Until your real test kit gets here, just add 5ppm of FC using liquid chlorine (1/2 gallon for your pool) daily. I would also read up in pool...

    Review of my SLAM technique

With a variance of 2 or 3 FC between your tests, I would review your testing process. Do you have the speed stir, as that can make testing a bit easier. Regardless, you still should not have that much variance if you take your time and test.

Adjust pH (and TA?) before SLAM

Your numbers look really good, but you also said you saw algae so something is off. I would keep your FC elevated and do an OCLT tonight to confirm what you have is really algae.

Adjust pH (and TA?) before SLAM

I would get chlorine in the pool ASAP, at least 5ppm per day, until you can test and officially start the SLAM. That will keep your current algae from getting out of control.

Getting better, still cloudy, what next?

Thats good, but I would still keep your chlorine elevated slightly over target. Now lets focus on your filter. Sand filters are good, but they can be the slowest to clear the water. Many users report that their filter works better when it is slightly dirty, so make sure you are only...

Getting better, still cloudy, what next?

I would do an OCLT to rule out algae. https://www.troublefreepool.com/blog/2019/01/18/perform-the-overnight-fc-loss-test-oclt/

    Adjusting Chemicals

Chlorine is always priority #1 as that is the only thing that kills algae. There is nothing wrong with a TA of 50, just make sure it doesnt go lower and adjust if it does.

Do you SLAM as soon as you have some algae?

This is your problem. Assuming no SWCG, 5 is the bare minimum and the target should be 8-10. Get panicked if it drops below 8 (see my avatar on how high I like my chlorine). Even if you do have a SWCG, if you are getting algae at 5, bump up your chlorine to 8 as 5 isn't working for you.

Be careful with Clorox Pool salt.

I’ve had issues with multiple brands. Luckily the stains lifted over time but were still annoying. I now pre-dissolve the salt in a big plastic tub for a day, then give it a stir and dump in the pool. There may still be some undissolved salt at the bottom of the pool but it goes away with one...

Pool is Muddy, what should I do?

Sounds like you are doing everything right, keep at it and the quicker you get stuff out of the pool, the quicker it should clear up. It will probably take days even weeks. Make sure you take pictures daily so you can look back and see progress. That helps people get though the frustrating...

Pool is Muddy, what should I do?

The SLAM level chlorine will kill the organics, but you still have to get the mud out of the pool by filtering, scooping, vacuuming, etc. Are you doing all of that and keeping an eye on your filter pressure. Any ideas how much mud and debris is on the bottom?

My Yellow Mustard Experience- Still working On it...

Make sure you are reading the chart correctly. You said your CYA was 55, so we round up to 60. That means you should be at 24 for a SLAM, which is to kill the algae. So its not ridiculously/embarrassingly high, its actually a tad low for a SLAM. Your next steps are below, beginning with a...

    July Vacation

A FC of 6 is barely in the Target FC Range which is 6-8 for a CYA of 50. No way I would leave my pool at that level then leave town. With your CYA, you can safely take your FC up to 20 as the SLAM level which is what I would recommend. At least do FC of 10-15 for peace of mind while you are away.

    Beach Vacation Ideas

We stayed in Gros-islet. It was a great location for the beach, just at the opposite end of the island as the airport. Our ride to the resort from the airport hit "rush hour" in the capital city, then we had to make a 15-minute stop for the car sick British couple to well... feed the fish...

    Combined Chlorine and Algae

There is nothing you need to do about the CCs, they are just part of the cycle. FC gets used up and turned into CC, then the CC's are burned off by the sun. Unless you have an indoor pool or a cover, just let the sun do its job. Thats bad advice from the pool store. Speaking of bad advice...

No spa overflow - Missouri pool

I assume you will also have a similar concern with adding water to the spa, unless they put in a separate fill line just for the spa. Filling and draining excess from the spa certainly are not terrible problems, but ones you would hope the builder would have thought through on a new build.

Got my water test kit and trying to figure out what to adjust first :)

You have the best test kit available, which should keep you out of the pool store and all of their nonsense. I may have missed it, but did you add chlorine? That is priority #1 right now and should be done ASAP. Everything else can wait, but chlorine of 0 is a recipe for disaster and can...

    High phosphates reading

Leslie's did their job... they gave you fancy yet inaccurate testing to create a false sense of panic and confusion and ultimately sold you a product that you don't need. Millions of people fall for their phosphate remover scam so don't feel too bad. Just know that Leslie's or any pool store...

Pool seems to just drink up bleach so fast

+1 on the SWCG recommendation. In the meantime, you live in a great place for liquid chlorine option instead of bleach. My favorite is Walmart for their Pool Essentials 10% chlorinating liquid usually stored inside of their store but with the bbq, pool, lawn stuff. I cant remember if Pinch A...

Pool seems to just drink up bleach so fast

I think the main thing you are missing is frequency of testing and adding chlorine so that you are always above the minimum. At a CYA of 40, you should never ever ever get below the minimum of 3. Ideally your pool consistently has FC in the target range of 5-7, but its totally fine to go a...

Pool seems to just drink up bleach so fast

I would do an OCLT to check and see if you have algae brewing. By looking at your pool math logs, I see lots of 0's and not close to your target FC level of 5-7.

    Beach Vacation Ideas

St. Lucia is where we ended up going, but you are right... its not the easiest place to get to. People from England seemed to have much more direct flight options which was odd to me. Regardless, it was a good trip once we got there. We celebrated our 23rd anniversary there and will save up...

Anyone do travel sports with their kids? Tips to make it more affordable?

True that. We just got back from vacation and left the resort at 9am yesterday morning and did not land back in Dallas until 1am. If I had a dollar for every socially unacceptable thing I saw on my trip, I would have paid for my trip and then some. Just use common sense like: Dont take off...

    FC Level

Liquid chlorine is great for an instant boost of chlorine and no extra ingredients, but there is no need to use it on a regular basis when your SWG is producing chlorine. I have a SWG and will only have to use liquid chlorine in these scenarios: - In the winter when the water is too cold for...

First season as a pool owner... Quickly realizing I need a lot of help

Add ~ 5FC of chlorine daily until your kit arrives so keep the algae at bay. Normally I would suggest Walmart, but that may be a bit challenging in your location unless you want to drive a bit, but any hardware store or pool store should have liquid chlorine. Note that 1/2 gallon of liquid...
