Appreciate it LP, and your theory on why they’d urge vertical installation makes sense too.

Like someone said, I can't complain but sometimes I still do. BTW that gif is one of my favorite scenes in that great movie.

I pulled that one out of the sealed ziplock bag Pentair packs the new union couplers in that they include with each SWG. If that really IS the wrong size, they're the one and only source of it. Probably a kid in the Pentair warehouse laughing his backside off right now.

Takes a village. Especially with me in the loop. 😜

Here's another thing I changed this morning. I kicked this new OEM o-ring to the curb. It is one of the new ones Pentair sent me with my replacement SWG. It looks like it may be the wrong size? That would be a funny trick to play on a customer. Don't know, don't care, all's well now.

That collective advice and another go have somehow sealed the drip. I honestly can't believe it but I'll take it. Not even sure why it was different this time but I think it was a combination of alignment is no longer perfect, being more methodical about tightening each side of the nut with...

Yup. They got me to buy the cleaning kit with that one. Complete waste of time and money.

Good lord. They must have somebody they like in the ink business.

In the last 6 weeks: 1. Spider gasket failure in the multiport valve causing flow errors. No big deal, that happens. 2. Found that because I heard water trickling in the front yard one day. Investigated and found water flowing at the pool plumbing air gap / backflow preventer hidden in some...

The way my last 6 weeks of pool work have gone, it will DEFINITELY get worse.

Thanks and good to know. Mine have always done just fine horizontal. Out of curiosity, is there some kind of reason why Pentair wasted ink saying, "Install SWC vertically for best performance" in the manual? Maybe to give themselves an out on warranty claims? I hope not.

One thing I didn't know until this week is that the preferred installation of the SWG is vertical. Mine ain't that.

When I pulled the SWG for the flip test, I brought out a magnifying glass and inspected the mating surface on the leaking end of the SWG (the end opposite the switch) before flipping it 180 degrees. That's brand new and has been carefully handled. That surface was perfect and there were no...

Flip test shows the leak does NOT travel.

I suspected that was true but didn't know. We'll see what the flip test shows. Thanks LP.

Helpful stuff all around guys, many thanks. It seems like the next step is to power down the cell, rotate it 180 degrees and do a short run in that position to see if the leak travels. If it travels, that will point to a possible defect in the mating surface of the cell which looks and feels...

Yes the side that's leaking is the side nearest the heater, I'll take a step back picture to give a better view of the plumbing. The heater was installed two years after the pool went in which explains its elevated position. There wasn't enough room on the ground floor.

The crack theory would also be consistent with this observation -- each time I dismount and remount the cell, the leak gets a little bit worse.

Because of my installation I took pictures instead and blew them up on my computer. Not ideal but unfortunately, getting a magnifying glass and then a human head into the correct potion to view that tangle of piping at the correct angle would be almost impossible.

I am trying to understand how over-tightening by hand can cause a leak -- what happens that's not good?

10 Day Old IC-40 Just Went Dark

Right Dirk, only one side leaking. I’ve put two new OEM o-rings on that leaking side so far but no improvement. It’s either my lube and seating technique (which has never been an issue before over the last 12 years) or how I am tightening the cell, which likewise has never been an issue...

10 Day Old IC-40 Just Went Dark

That's what I'd always thought until this new leak popped up that resisted the things I usually do to fix leaks. They still seem to line up pretty good. Wish I could post the 5 second video I took because it shows the exact source of the leak -- and it is the back of the union nut. Seems...

The piping lines up well. I install the cell by starting on one side with three or four turns at the union to get the threads engaged, then the same on the other side, then back and forth, trying to basically have both unions hit the finish line at the same time. I need to just go rinse and...
