Ortega valve - can I do without?

Thought I'd post a follow-up for the next guy with an Ortega valve problem. The simple Ortega "rebuild" (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0118DFGGA?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details + spring) is working just fine. I'd done this a couple times through the years but had thought it time to get...

Ortega valve - can I do without?

Thanks Jim...now that I think about it, that's logical. And Poolman, those blue handled valves all go to the pool. I haven't been completely idle. The day I read Jim's response I went out and drained the spa (clean out winter leaves), backwashed the DE filter, and inspected the Ortega "guts"...

Ortega valve - can I do without?

Thanks for the reply. My thought though is to just block the flow so the spa can't drain at all. (It has a separate overflow into the pool that runs daily.) Do I need the check valve just to facilitate manual draining/cleaning of the spa?

Ortega valve - can I do without?

My pool has an old Ortega valve between spa and pool. First time I put in new parts (more than 15 years ago) I learned it was considered obsolete at the time. Lately my spa drains down to pool level within 30 min or so of recirculation stopping, so it's not working. I figured it was time to...

    Insufficient backwash?

Update for anyone who reads this thread. After a couple weeks of normal use the system flow slowly improved (as judged by suction and waterfall flow) to where it's only a little less than I saw with the new grids. Not sure how to explain this time-dependent improvement but if the initial...

    Insufficient backwash?

Pressure has been definitely weird. Before the new grids it'd sit at 12psi when good and get up to 20 when very dirty. After the new grids it was about 8, but even after the recent monsoon and poor suction it was reading only 6. At the moment after cleaning and with "disappointing" suction...

    Insufficient backwash?

Right...I hate to do that and really want to be sure it's not just insufficient back wash. I will run in it in this "disappointing mode" until I need another full backwash (we got more monsoon coming this year no doubt) and then backwash the heck out of it. Really my initial question is should...

    Insufficient backwash?

Thanks Allen. My setup doesn't have a rinse position just an up/down valve that switches from pool recirculation to sending the water out. I attach a picture. I'm not sure what physically is happening in each of the steps, particularly the rinse.. Obviously backwash is supposed to send water...

    Insufficient backwash?

    It's a Hayward Progrid - don't see the model - about 10yrs old 3.5ft tall, takes 7.5 grids.

    Insufficient backwash?

My main battle with my pool for 20+ years is maintaining enough suction to keep my skimmer skimming and my Hayward crawler crawling. As the DE filter clogs and the back pressure rises this gets harder and harder. Not enough suction to go around. This year installed new DE filter grids and was...

    Pentair light not working

If you measure 12V across the bulb it should light (transformer is delivering enough current to maintain the voltage drop). Either you're not actually measuring the voltage drop across the bulb or the bulb is defective. Try it with a different 12V source.

    pool light breaker trips

I found out the contractor's fix $700 replacement would be "halogen like you have", apparently identical to my existing Pentair 6" light. He'd charge $1500 to install an LED-based fixture. But a surprise twist this morning. I had opened my housing yesterday and wanting to look closer today I...

    pool light breaker trips

Indeed I need to find out what the contactor would install. I'd prefer LED (less power) and I see plenty of 120V 10" LED pool lights (with cables) on Amazon in the $300 range (Chinese probably). So I'm just a little surprised to be stuck with no real good option.

    pool light breaker trips

I've done a little more. Verified the GCFI is OK by disconnecting the light at the J-Box and adding another load: no trip. Pulled the pool light. No obvious problem. Contains a little halogen lamp (bayonet mount it appears), continues to trip when tested. I figure I need to repace the light...

    pool light breaker trips

OK, not so easy through the water. Looks like the internet pictures I see for 6" pentair though I see only 4 screws (+ one on top).

    pool light breaker trips

A couple more questions please... Disconnecting light at J-Box showed no problem (tripping) in GFCI unit implying short to ground in the old cable to lamp. I see (on Youtube) many DIY replacements using 120V LED products. Sounds simple (neglecting wire pulling drama). My pool is apparently...

    pool light breaker trips

Thanks both for your input. 1poolman1, while I may try to check the J-box myself, wouldn't it be reasonable to ask the contractor to have his guy check it rather than just shoot in the dark?

    pool light breaker trips

Howdy, I know there are many previous similar threads. Mine: had 25yr old plaster pool chipped out and remade with micropebble in February. I asked to include "make the light work" and he allocated $100 charge to me for it. I watched the guy test it (while dry) and it worked (though he...

    Plaster pool repair/renovation

Waking up this thread and I attach a picture of the plaster damage at bottom of the pool as seen today. (Ignore a few leaves floating on the surface.) After researching re-plastering I was concerned that I'd be sold a big remodel. But two estimators told me they could simply repair the...

    Plaster pool repair/renovation

Thanks Allen. Seems to be no water loss or any chemistry problem in the 5 days since I noticed this (it may have been there much longer...it's not noticeable till you look for it). I'm also thinking it can wait but I'm wondering who to approach for a fix (pool re-plasterers?) and what it's...

    Plaster pool repair/renovation

Noticed a funny "eggshell" type crack in my pool floor. I include 2 photos. The pool is 25 years old and I'm in Phoenix. Looking for some advice on 1) what it will take to fix it, and 2) assuming the pool needs to be drained to repair, should it be put off until a cooler time? Thanks in...

Hayward Ecostar 3400VSP repair or replace

Thanks for the sympathetic replies...here's what happened in the past few hours. Went to my local Mom and Pop pool shop to discuss their recommended drive swap (3rd party, can't remember the name, $400+labor so ~$600). Was ready to pull the trigger when they noticed the one I need (flange...
