We pay someone to open and close and otherwise I do TFP methods. Our guy retired and we have a new one. When they opened the pool yesterday it is emerald green. I have never in almost 12 years had green in my pool. We close late and open early before and after warm weather. close late October and open Early May in New Jersey.

Do you all think they didn't put enough chlorine in the pool to last the winter. Is there any other reason this would happen.

All the levels are ok except it needs some cya. The chlorine level is at 2.5. In ground vinyl

Now I will have to do the slam thing which since we have had the pool I have never needed.

Well, there's always a first time. You're not the first to go many seasons before experiencing an algae issue. Be sure to use your TF-Series test kit (or Taylor K-2006C) to maintain accurate levels and get you through the SLAM Process. Stick with that SLAM page and you'll do fine. Good luck!

I agree, opening late is not good. What was the Chlorine level when it was closed?

I opened the last week of April, and I had a little cloudiness.

Could your cover have been compromised during the winter? If so, any cover opening would allow debris in and could create algae.

Are you asking me or OP?

I follow the link below to a T, including a good quality polyquat 60. Open April 15 every year and FC is 2-2.5 upon openning.

This is generally not true. I have a mesh cover and all sorts of debris gets in the pool, including HUNDREDS of worms that I have to remove every spring. If you close late, follow the process to close and open early, debris or not, you can avoid algae.

Hello fellow Jersey poster.

This past winter was a mess for my pool as well. The up and down of the temp played havoc on the water quality.

Last year I had everything sorted out within 48 hrs. This year it'll be closer to a week.

I concur. Here in Michigan I usually open mid-may. By then the water is just starting to turn green. This year I couldn't open until yesterday (lots of events and bad weather, etc). However, my pool is almost already clear.

I found that getting the pump going, adding SLAM level chlorine, brushing all sides and bottom of pool, and running the filter 24/7 are the ways to a quick clear pool. I can almost see the bottom of mine and I just opened it last night.

I think today is the first day it is over 60. We are on the coast and it stays cold longer. and by the end of October we are wearing coats.

We are getting there - at this point it is just cloudy. I will backwash the de tomorrow and see if that helps move things along. The chlorine level is staying pretty stable.

I always hook up the pump in April and get it running, leave the cover on, but shock the pool before it reaches 60 degrees.
After the trees have quit dropping there junk, I then remove the cover, balance the water and have a cold one.

I'm also in NJ, but further from the coast, and I usually open mid April. I opened my pool on April 27th and the water temp was already at 64 and I had the start of a swamp. We had a warm fall, winter, and spring. It's not surprising to open to algae this year.

Opening in May/June is a recipe for a green pool. I'm in Ohio and open April 15. Never get algae. We have had an exceptionally warm spring, which hasn't helped..
This. Opening in May is far from “early.” I also live in Ohio (10 mins from Columbus) and I closed November 1st and opened March 16th, which I know is overkill. Never had algae either. I see many who open their pools in May and their water looks great, but I’m not brave enough to do it lol
