Equipment life expectations

Opened my pool summer of 2015 so my equipment is going on 9/10 years old. LIving in Northern Ohio I only get 4 mths of use, other 8 mths the equipment sits outside on the pad.
I see the prices of filters & pumps has doubled, maybe tripled since 2014.

My pump housing is getting old, the 'clear' top is clouded, the filter basket in the pump housing is broken, my filter Hayward Star has numerous issue.

I hate to drop $1k-$1.5k on new equipment, but I think I am going to do it, hopefully I get another 9/10 years out of the new items. I plan on going with the same models I installed 9 years ago:

Hayward Super II Energy Efficient 1 HP 115/230V Single Speed Pool Pump - W3SP3010EEAZ

Hayward Star Clear Plus Cartridge Filter | W3C9002| W3C12002 | W3C19752 - W3C9002

Any comments, suggestions, or encouragement?

Single speed pool pumps greater then 1HP are not allowed to be manufactured or sold in the US anymore. Federal energy regulations basically forced every pump to be variable speed. If you’re finding single speed pumps for sale, they are likely old stock.

Either way, you should upgrade to a VSP as the energy savings are quite good. You don’t have to go with one of the big 3 if you’re cost sensitive.

@1poolman1 can probably give some good suggestions.

Nine to 10 years is getting a bit old for pool equipment, but certainly not end-of-life. If the equipment is drained the 8 months its not used, it really has little use for that age. If it is just the lid on your pump (you don't say which one you have) new could be $55.00. Aftermarket ones are half that and work well. If you need a new motor. Just get a new variable-speed one if the rest of the pump is good.
If you can replace all your equipment for $1k-$1.5k, that's great for today's prices. If the filter tank s giving you issues, get a new filter, you'll be happier in the long run. Nothing is as good as new except new.
New stuff, like pumps and lights, doesn't last like older, especially with the advent of VSP which are basically computers attached to motors and the put outdoors in whatever the weather can throw at it. With care they can, I've gotten near 15 years out of my Hayward EcoStar, a pump that, being first generation Hayward, was plagued with issues. I got a good one.

15 years on a pump, is a long time. I did shop around a bit and see I can buy a replacement housing basket and lid. Thanks both of you for the suggestions. I currently have a 2 hp hayward super ii pump, and its a full 1 hp too much, and I think i found some new old stock 1hp same model for under $500. I might be able to replace both the filtration housing/new OEM hayward filter, and new hayward 1hp super 2 pump for under a grand, that is doing the install myself. Although lounging at the pool with my 2 dogs in the summer is my primary hobby, saving a little dough is a close second, especially in this crazy inflation induced economy

Spend a bit more on a motor for your existing pump, like a Nidec Neptune NPTT225 or 27 (depending on the true horsepower of your existing motor) and keep that Super 2 pump. You will then have a true VSP with complete control over the times and RPM of the pump. You can't just put a 1hp motor on that pump without changing the impeller as well or the motor will burn up in very short order.

I have a SUV going on 9/10 years old but it works great. Will you buy me a new one ? :ROFLMAO:

Jokes aside, the filter housing should last a generation. It's barely broken in. Replace the cartridges when they rip or otherwise fall apart.

The pump you should upgrade for energy savings, not because it's old. A new VS pump / motor will literally pay for itself, it just takes a bit longer with short seasons.

Another suggestion is to bring the equipment inside for the winter, or at least into a shed so it's out of the elements. I'd never leave anything else that cost a few thousand dollars sitting in a snow drift for up to a month. 10X that for anything with electronics. Under no circumstances, and i don't care 'it can handle it'. (Which it can). But why ?

*assuming one is physically capable. You're going to DIY the equipment install, you're capable. It takes me 20 mins to store / unstore the equipment and its worth every minute IMO.

Thanks, but i never was going to just replace the motor, i was going to buy a whole new pump & motor,, I've now found that the source of my great prices 'pool supply delivery' in sarasota, that had the pump/motor combo for $485,, is out of business and the prices on their webpage are 2+ years old.
So I've ordered a new basket & hayward lid off Amazon. I am going to pull the 2" pvc off and re-tape the joints, a couple have small leaks. I will look at the VSP motor replacements.
THanks again !

If you are going to pull the fittings from the pump, and if it doesn't have unions to do so, get a set of hi-temperature pump unions. They seal with an O ring instead of thread sealant. You don't list what pump you have now, guessing the Super 2?

I purchased the following in 2014, and installed in early 2015.
Filter: Hayward C17502 Star-Clear Plus 175-Square-Foot Cartridge Filter
Pump: Hayward SP3015X20AZ Super II 2-Horsepower Pool Pump, AZ Market

I did install the unions, so removal of the pump or filtration unit shouldn't be too painful.

Its amazing what some magic lube on the gaskets, and a fresh taping of the PVC joints can do. Thanks to the experienced posters above me, i invested a few hundred in a new OEM filter, an OEM pump cover, a new OEM pump filter, re taped my PVC joints using BLUE MONSTER tape, did the pump drain plug & filter drain plug,, now the pool is clear as a whistle and the pump doesn't need to be primed. Saved me a lot of dough, hope to get at least one more season out of this 10 year old equipment.

30 years on my Sta-Rite pump (motor changed 10 years ago but head is original), 30 years on my Polaris 380 (belts replaced ~5 years ago), 5 years on the original Polaris pump but the Hayward replacement has been going strong for 25 years. The least robust equipment has been the heater - Laars Lite 2 replaced after 20 years, curent one going on 10 years and showing no signs of failure.

I wouldn't touch anything until you need to.
