Good afternoon all,
Quick question.....I have an opportunity to purchase a Intellipro VSF 3hp pump for a really great price to replace my worn out single speed 1.5 motor/pump.
Question is will that be too much pump for the Sta rite sm8150 filter? I believe my pool is roughly 24,000 gallons.
Sorry for the uncertainty, I only moved in last august and live in Pennsylvania so didn't get much of a chance last year to enjoy the pool.
Thank you!

Go for it.

A VS pump is never too big. You run it at the speeds and HP that work for your pool.

Sorry, not understanding your reply? I understand the "Go for it" part but the part about a VS being too big, Run it at the speeds and HP that work for you pool is where I am lost? I guess if it's a variable speed can I not run it at a lower speed thus not running it at 3hp? The reason I am looking to go with a VS is they are supposed to be more efficient and less cost to operate?
Thank you for the reply and getting back to me. Again I am a nubbie and never had an Inground pool before.
Thanks,

The pump is only 3HP at its maximum speed of 3450 RPM. Run it at less RPM and it is lower HP.

You will get the efficiency because you can run the pump at the speed and HP your pool needs, not what the pump runs at. The lower the RPM the less electricity is used. Here is a typical pump energy usage...
